Ebrahim Alkazi was a champion for the visual arts and theatre in India and beyond, who strove to ensure that art histories were chronicled, disseminated, and enlivened.
Ebrahim Alkazi founded collections of visual arts and photography and archived Indian theatre with a mission to foster cultural understanding. Honoring E. Alkazi’s conviction that artistic works can “serve as guide-posts and sources of inspiration to succeeding generations,” The Alkazi Foundation for the Arts, Alkazi Theatre Archives, and the Alkazi Collection are unique interdisciplinary collections comprising of paintings, sculpture, print works, mixed media, photography, theatre archives, and more. E. Alkazi also founded Art Heritage with his wife Roshen Alkazi as a gallery devoted to promoting modern and contemporary Indian art. In bringing together such a constellation of artistic practices, these entities seek to explore links across cultural spheres and encourage dialogue.
Alkazi 100 programming highlights materials from these collections of photography, visual arts, and theatre archives. A 2025–2026 programming series will be collaboratively presented by sister organizations The Alkazi Foundation for the Arts, Art Heritage, and Alkazi Theatre Archives.
Foregrounding Women in the Collection
To mark E. Alkazi’s centenary and his legacy of commitment to the arts, Alkazi 100 begins with amplifying the indelible contributions of women across creative fields in India’s history through these three collections. Through exhibitions, publications, and events, Alkazi 100 programming will explore multiple themes, including delving into the central role of women in cultural histories and contemporary artistic outlooks.

'Sparseeing' | Photobook Launch and Display
Journey to the 1950s, the moment of a heady modernism, eclecticism, and industrial ambition. Fuelled by entrepreneurial aspirations, a grand mansion in the heart of Jamshedpur (Tatanagar) became home to a thriving Parsee family. Situated above the city’s Regal Cinema, it was also the residence of Mr. Keki Gazder, an amateur photographer, whose obsessive documentation and diary entries of a world in transition frame the story of this new photobook. Join us for the launch of 'Sparseeing' — a photobook and (travelling) archival exhibit by the 2022 Alkazi Photobook Grant recipients, Joyona Medhi and Abhishek Basu. The artist/authors will be in conversation with Suryanandini Narain, Assistant Professor at the School of Arts and Aesthetics, JNU. The photobook will be available at a discounted price at the launch. On view till 4 January 2026. The exhibition in Delhi is presented in association with Offset Projects and supported by Tata Trusts.

'Disobedient Subjects: Bombay 1930-1931'
'Disobedient Subjects: Bombay 1930-1931,' a new exhibition from the Alkazi Foundation for the Arts and the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya, curated by Avrati Bhatnagar and Sumathi Ramaswamy, offers an exploration into the history of civil disobedience and nationalist politics, through images in the K.L. Nursey album. These rare photographs, being exhibited for the first time, capture the heart of the revolutionary mass action in Bombay (today's Mumbai) in the early 1930s, including the contribution of the desh sevikas, emerging from a nationalist women's organization at the time.

Ebrahim Alkazi (1925–2020) dedicated his life’s work to promoting the arts in India. As both practitioner and educator, E. Alkazi revolutionized Indian theatre, using the form to hold a mirror to society and our human nature. After having served as Director of India’s National School of Drama, Alkazi brought the same visionary spirit to visual arts. In 1977 he founded Art Heritage in Delhi as an independent contemporary art gallery with his wife Roshen Alkazi, focused on an expansive approach to presenting contemporary art. E. Alkazi was also devoted to the preservation of India’s pre- and post-Independence photographic history, developing a world-renowned collection of images and advancing scholarship.
